Blazing Cinematic Trails

This is what Erika decided to do after graduating from the University of Lund in 2000. She moved to Barcelona and began working for production houses and taking classes on directing, learning all the ins and outs of adult filmmaking. Wanting to do it “her way”, she started her own company “Lust Films” and set about becoming a writer, director and producer of a new type of adult cinema. Her first film, “The Good Girl” debuted in 2004 and was a big internet smash, being downloaded 2 million times in the first few months of being released for free on the internet. It went on to win the NINFA prize for best short film at the 2005 International Erotic Film Festival in Barcelona.

After “The Good Girl”, Erika followed it up with a bigger project titled “Five Hot Stories for Her”, a compilation of five short stories (including “the Good Girl”) that took the world by storm in 2007 winning awards and international acclaim. “Five Hot Stories” was then quickly followed up by the “Barcelona Sex Project”, an experimental documentary that explores the sex lives and orgasms of six modern day Barcelonans. Afterwards, “Life, Love, Lust” a follow up to the “Five Hot Stories” project was released to critical and commercial acclaim further cementing Ms. Lust’s role as a pioneer in the medium of feminist porn.

Taking Porn Literally

On top of blazing cinematic trails, Erika Lust also decided to tackle the feminist porn culture on the literary front, publishing three different books on the subject: “Good Porn”, “The Erotic Bible of Europe” and “Love Me Like You Hate Me”. In “Good Porn” Erika opens up the discourse on how a women can consider be a feminist yet still enjoy porn. She tosses out the idea that porn was invented strictly for men and examines how porn can also be used to help heighten a woman’s sexual appetite. She sees porn as a “tool for excitement, education and pleasure” and calls for more female centric porn that focuses on the holistic nature of the female libido using “details, situations, fantasies, hints, and scenarios” in order to peak women’s arousal.

As the Internet continues to raise our children, they are being exposed to explicit content at younger and younger ages. Instead of letting the ideals of sexuality, femininity and masculinity be interpreted by the male dominated mainstream porn industry, Erika strives to create content that frees women from playing the limited roles that the mainstream porn purveyors deem as sexually attractive (the school girl, the nurse, the french maid for example) and allows them to discover what constitutes arousal and sexuality on their own terms.

Erika’s latest film is “Cabaret Desire” which was released in the fall of 2011. It is set in Barcelona’s “Poetry Brothel” and it is considered Erika’s biggest and “most personal” project to date. Like her other projects, it is a compilation of short porn vignettes that focus on story, scene, music and even wardrobe just as much as is it focuses on raw sensuality. “I shot Cabaret Desire in Barcelona over the course of fifteen days. We filmed in nine different locations and with more than ten actors. I consider this movie to be my most ambitious project, and my goal is to show modern women and men enjoying their sexuality with an intelligent and fresh script.

I don’t like the way sex is portrayed in most porn films (stupid plots, ugly locations, ridiculous characters, bad lighting…), and I also don’t like the way mainstream cinema narrates sex (there’s always guilt, shame, bad karma, and the characters’ sexual behavior tend to get them in trouble). I demand a new genre where sex is portrayed positively, where sex is associated with joy and life. I’ve made Cabaret Desire to spark your imagination and fantasies, with an innovative mise-en-scène, beautiful sets, and characters we can identify with.
The Poetry Brothel from New York and its Barcelona branch kindly participated in this project. They are a talented group of creative and innovative minds that takes poetry outside its often stuffy confines and places it in the lush interiors of vintage saloons, classrooms and libraries. In Cabaret Desire, the poets unveil and narrate four amazing erotic tales to the audience and their presence gives the film a special atmosphere.

Here are some of the highlights of the discussion….

Where the sun don’t shine

Some of the Porn Clubbers expressed confusion about the “first anal” claims that appeared on the back covers of both “Goddess” and “Gia”. How can two different titles both claim to have footage Sunny’s anal cherry being popped? Was the same scene inserted into both movies? Is Sunny’s ass so tight, that each time feels like the first time? According to Sunny, each movie is claiming a different “first” in terms of anal exploration. In “Gia” Sunny’s is shown in her very first anal scene, however, it is a G/G scene, which means that she is getting a foreign object inserted up her sphincter by another girl. In “Goddess” Sunny appears in her very first B/G anal scene, which means that she is shown taking an actual cock up her poop shoot.

It was during this topical discussion, that the idea of what constitutes anal sex was debated. One porn club member brought up the point that they felt a little “cheated” when watching “Gia” because they were expecting a real anal scene and only got themselves a girl on girl anal insertion scene. While they did admit that the scene was pretty hot, they felt that the back cover’s claims were perhaps a bit misleading. According to Sunny and Daniel, once anything is inserted into the butthole, it is considered an “anal scene”. I tend to agree with them on this point, but I can also see where the disappointed Porn Clubber is coming from. If you are looking forward to seeing some cock going into Sunny Leon’s hot ass, a dildo insertion is just not going to cut it. Thankfully, all I needed to do is put in the other DVD.

As to whether or not we will be seeing more anal scenes from this Indian Goddess, Miss Leon is not sure at the moment. While the scenes were steaming hot, Sunny also admits that they were not the easiest to do.

Gia

There was also some discussion on whether “Gia” was based on the life of the supermodel of the same name or whether it was based on the life of some porn star that also happened to be named Gia. The consensus seems to be that the movie was loosely based on the life of the super model Gia (there is also a movie starring Angelina Jolie about her) with the whole “what if she was a porn star instead?” idea thrown into the plot.

Goddess

While Gia’s subtitle is “portrait of a Porn Star” it appears that “Goddess” is a true portrait on a porn star. The concept of the movie was to basically highlight Sunny and her many on screen talents. While some porn enthusiasts would have preferred more straight up sex scenes, others seem to really dig the concept. Sunny and Daniel revealed that “Goddess” seems to be a real favorite among Sunny fans and that they have plans to make other films like it that highlight other porn stars. Sunny’s excellent choice of lingerie was also discussed and it appears that picking out her undies is one of the Indian Goddess’s favorite parts of the job, aside from doing girl on girl scenes.

Hooray for Bollywood

It appears that Big Boss House and Jism 2 are not going to be the only things on Miss Leon’s Indian resume. During the discussion, she revealed that she is currently spending half her time in Mumbai, working on a number of different mainstream Bollywood films. While Indian culture is still closed to porn, they apparently cannot get enough of this beautiful porn star. Sunny has plans to keep her Bollywood career going for years to come and also plans to continue to direct own porn films. She has also not ruled out the possibility of the two different career paths emerging one day into a Bollywood themed porn movie. Hopefully , the title “Cumdog Millionaire” will still be available.

Wrong, Wrong, Wrong

It turns out that Jism is not only the sticky stuff pooling on your significant other’s back, it is also the Hindi word for “Body”, which kind of makes sense when you think about it. So after translation, the movie that Sunny Leone just recently signed up to do is really “Body 2” ,making it not some Indian Porn with lots of money shots, but rather a mainstream Bollywood thriller being produced by Indian film heavyweight Mahesh Bhatt.

Cum just don’t fly in India

It turns out the reason why an Indian director can come out with a move titled Jism and not have the country thinking it is some porn, is because hardcore porn is illegal in this little country of 750 million people. While India does not necessarily have porn police busting into homes to look for secret porn stashes and jerking teenagers, it still has laws on the books making it illegal to distribute hardcore porn in stores or even online. While you can still find bootleg copies of Porn on the streets of Calcutta as well as on the cellphones of certain Indian Politicians , getting caught with it could mean a heavy fine and even the possibility of jail time (take that Alabama).

This is why Sunny’s appearance on the popular Television Show “Big Boss” was so controversial. Unlike Americans, who accept porn stars into their homes with open arms, revealing yourself as a porn star to a bunch of Indian roommates is kind of like telling a room full of Vegans that you happen to be a butcher who really likes their job. You are certainly going to get some stares and whispers.

Stares and whispers aside, it does appear that Sunny’s motherland has warmed up to the Indo-Canadian-American Beauty despite the fact that she is a “Blue Film” star. In fact, it seems that the forbidden path that Sunny chose to take has actually helped with her exposure in the country, making “Jism 2” one of the most anticipated Bollywood events of this year.

Soft Core

While straight up cum flying pornography is illegal in India, soft core films like the crap you find on the Lifetime Movie Network late at night is acceptable. In fact, it would be a safe bet that soft core films that are forced to have a story line and severely edited sex scenes are a booming business within the porn deprived country. This was what probably made the first “Jism” film which was basically an erotic twist on “Double Indemnity” such a smash hit way back in 2003. While not exactly as controversial as Sharon Stone’s beaver shot in Instinct, Jism was very explicit by Bollywood standards. For this reason,it really captured the country’s attention. It was believed to help kick start a new erotic film trend in Bollywood and help pull the film industry out of a bit of a slump that it was going through. It also helped make the career of both the director Bheet and the stunning star Bipasha Basu.

Getting Harder

Just like how the state of Utah can boast the highest percentage of online porn viewers, the country of India has also displayed a healthy interest in porn despite the country’s traditional prurient stance on the matter. The current popularity of porn stars like Sunny Leone in the country is further proof that the Indo culture is started to soften up (pun kind of intended) its stance towards hard core pornography. While Jism 2 will probably not feature any B/G anal penetration shots (check out Sunny Leone’s “Goddess” for that) you can be damn sure that it will be featuring Sunny in many erotically charged sex scenes that would have been unheard of in Bollywood a decade ago. This is a good sign that the film industry in India is growing up a bit while still clinging on to their song and dance numbers.

Sunny Leone is currently busy working out and learning as much as she can about the Hindi language and Indian culture as she can. “Jism 2” is being helmed by Pooja Bhatt (Mahesh Bhatt’s daughter) and is excepted to be released sometime this summer. I am not sure when you will be able to find it on Netflix.

Modeling Career

Like all good Sikh Parents, Sunny’s folks wanted her to go into something stable such as a career in pediatric nursing, but Sunny decided that she wanted to go in another direction. Blessed with exotic good looks, she aspired to be a model but had trouble finding work on the account of her being only 5’4” which is practically midget status in the modeling world.
